Aesthetics (non-invasive cosmetic treatments)

The principles of art and beauty Iends itself rather romantically to the definition for non-surgical cosmetic treatments, don’t you think?

The quest to prolong youth and beauty is not a new concept, but the meteoric rise of non-invasive cosmetic treatments is a game-changer. And let’s face it, one that is here to stay.

Whether you’re a seasoned customer at your local Aesthetics clinic, or have a curiosity to know more about it, you’ve come to the right place.

This guide will explore the most frequently asked questions on the internet regarding aesthetic enhancements and non-surgical beauty treatments.

So, let’s throw ourselves straight in!

What is non-invasive cosmetic surgery?

Non-invasive cosmetic surgery is a treatment to enhance the appearance of face and body, using non-surgical techniques. This essentially means that there are no incisions or removal of tissue. They are an alternative to ‘invasive’ surgical procedures, such as facelifts or liposuction. Good news for everybody!

Non-surgical technologies can include injectables, lasers, ultrasound, and radiofrequency (amongst others). They address a variety of the concerns that niggle or plague us mere mortals, including fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and excess fat.

Registered Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Aesthetician Joanne Glenton who works from her Middlesbrough clinic Glow Jo has clear front runners in the popularity of the treatments she delivers.

Jo advises that Botox and dermal (including lip) fillers are by far her most in-demand treatments, with others such as derma eye, tear trough and Vitamin B12 injections also proving extremely popular. Jo says that skin boosters are definitely starting to trend at her clinic, so expect the popularity of that to keep rising!

What you might be surprised to know is that 8% of the clients queuing up for Jo’s treatments are MEN. Again, this is an upward trend, proving that looking and feeling great is a universal goal not restricted by gender.

I asked Jo what advice she would offer our readers? This is what she had to say...

"Do your research, check credentials. What are their qualifications? Are they insured, and can they deal with complications? Don't be afraid to ask your aesthetician these questions, after all it's your face"!

Keep your eyes peeled for more features and an upcoming interview with Jo. If you've any questions you'd like to put to her, why don't you give her a follow on Instagram?

What are the best non-invasive cosmetic procedures?

Interesting that this should be one of the most popular questions asked on the internet.

What defines ‘the best’?

Is it the most effective? Value for money? Longest lasting? Treatments that have the quickest recovery? Most immediate visible impact?

It could be any or all of the above. As this is subjective, it’s best that you do your research before choosing which treatment is BEST FOR YOU. Here are some of the benefits and risks:

Benefits Of Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures
  • Minimal recovery time - patients can usually return to their normal activities soon after the procedure.

  • Less pain and discomfort in comparison to surgical procedures.

  • Less invasive - no incisions, cutting, or stitching equals less scarring.

  • Lower risk of complications.

  • Lower cost compared to traditional surgical procedures.

Risks Of Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures

While non-invasive cosmetic procedures offer many benefits, it’s important to understand that they also come with certain risks. Whilst you may not experience any of these, some of the potential risks can include the following:

  • Pain and discomfort during or after the procedure.

  • Bruising and swelling that may last a few days to a week.

  • Infection - although low, there is always a risk of infection with any procedure.

  • Allergic reaction

  • Unsatisfactory results

Although the risks can be minimal, it’s important to find and consult with a reputable and qualified practitioner. That way, you can make sure you’re informed, happy and comfortable with the procedure from start to finish.

What beauty treatments are safe during pregnancy?

Woman holding pregnant baby bump

Hey, you are ‘with child’? Congratulations, you are blessed! My own two pregnancies couldn’t have been more different. When I fell pregnant with my second child, I was once again looking forward to renewed energy, shiny and glowing skin. It was a surprise then, when I found myself feeling tired, lacklustre and to add insult to injury sporting POOR SKIN for the first time in my life!

Grotbags the witch

If you’re lucky enough to have glowing skin and an angelic aura during your gestation, I’m really happy for you. However, if your skin is dull, and you feel like Grotbags after a gruelling double shift of Witching, can you still visit your favourite aesthetician for some pampering?

To ensure the safety of your unborn child, these are the treatments that should definitely be avoided during pregnancy.

X Injectables such as Botox

X Fillers such as Juvederm and Vollure

X Treatments which use lidocaine and epinephrine

X CoolSculpting (this should be avoided for 6 – 12 months after giving birth)

X Tattoo Removal

X Any procedures that require numbing cream.

Here’s what IS safe:

֍ Some laser hair removal treatments such as V-Beam without numbing cream.

֍ Trivantage (for sunspots, not tattoo removal) without numbing cream.

֍ Ultherapy – again, no numbing!

֍ Ultrasonic facials (so long as the provider uses products that don’t contain Retinols, Glycolic Acids, Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid and Benzol Peroxide).

֍ Dermaplaning

֍ Microdermabrasion
